Tong Lau Moving

Tong Lau removals

No lift, narrow stairs, arranged with experience and manpower.

Inside a narrow Tong Lau staircase in Hong Kong, two movers in blue polo shirts work together, carrying wrapped furniture down the stairs

Service highlights

For Tong Lau moving and no-lift moving, first check the actual stair flights, corners, doorways and the dimensions of large items, then confirm dismantling, manpower and the moving method. Floor number alone is not the only basis; if there is a mezzanine, platform, half-floor or a different entrance, the route details should be provided together.

Tong Lau stairs can be narrow and steep, with tight corners; large furniture may need dismantling or even separate hoisting. We first check the floor, stair width and corners before deciding on manpower, assembly/disassembly and the moving method.

Tong Lau moving: first measure the staircase and the turning space for furniture

Photograph the full route from the street and entrance to the unit, especially each landing, corner, protruding railing and narrow doorway. Large sofas, mattresses, wardrobes and fridges need length, width and height. Being able to move them up a straight staircase does not mean they can definitely turn at a landing.

When enquiring, state the actual starting floor, destination floor and any intermediate flights of stairs, as well as whether there is a loft or extra steps. The charging method for stairs and any dismantling, protection or other arrangements needed should be clearly listed in the written quotation; do not treat all buildings without a lift as the same route.

Moving without a lift: prepare separately for box items and large items

Books and heavy items should be packed into smaller boxes that are easier and safer to handle. Fragile items should be packed and marked separately. Do not overfill boxes just to reduce the number of cartons. Clearly separate the items to be moved, disposed of and kept, to avoid repeated handling in narrow passages on the day.

If items cannot pass through the stairs normally, first assess whether they can be dismantled or whether there is another safe method. Do not remove public fittings, railings or door frames yourself, and do not assume lifting by crane is always feasible; any additional work and required arrangements should be confirmed in advance.

FAQ

Related questions

What if large furniture cannot fit up the stairs?

Dismantling, lifting or buying new at the new home can be considered. After assessment, we will explain the feasible options.

Is it enough to just give the floor number for Tong Lau moving?

Not enough. Please also provide the entrance, stair flights, half-landings or platforms, and the dimensions of large items and corners. Even Tong Lau on the same floor can have very different actual routes.

Do Tong Lau moves always require furniture dismantling first?

Not necessarily. It depends on the item structure and the whole route, and whether it can be reassembled after dismantling. Fixed, aged or specially joined furniture must be assessed separately, and should not be forced apart by yourself.

If there is a lift but the items do not fit, is it treated as a standard move?

The items, lift and staircase route should be checked separately. Do not assume that having a lift means all large items can use it. The moving method and charges must be confirmed first.
